Perennials, What are They?

Have you been to the garden store lately and seen the signs saying that one plant is an annual while others are perennials? What is the difference? Which plant should you choose to put in your garden? Can one of these be a better choice then the other? There are many different options available to the gardener in each type of plant. The main difference between these plants is their life span. The perennial is a plant that will return year after year, if well taken care of. Annuals, on the other hand, will grow and seed, but will not store food or energy to grow again the next season.

The perennial is able to store its food through the course of its growing life, usually spring through fall. Most of these plants can be purchased in the form of bulbs that the gardener will plant the spring before they hope to have them. But, like all of these plants, the perennial needs to be feed and well taken care of in order to succeed year after year. To know how to do this for your specific plant, you will need to read up on the details of that plant. Each one will have different needs in soil nutrients, water needs, and the amount of sun necessary for it to store enough energy for the next year. And, this type of plant does not have to be flowers. In fact, from trees to bushes, the perennial is a broad name given to plants that will return season after season.

This also brings about the question of how long they will keep returning. Again, though, this depends greatly on what type of plant it is and how it is taken care of. But, in most cases, the perennial will continue to bloom for a few seasons. In order to know what type of these plants you want, you will need to consider the amount of sun and temperature it will get. Because these plants need to spend time soaking up the rays to store energy, they may need to be provided with a certain level each day. But, in order to know for sure what types of these plants you should purchase, you should consult a climate chart to determine what climate zone you are in. From there, you will be able to tell which plants will do well in your area.
