What to consider when xeriscaping

When planning and designing a xerscape garden, group plants together that have the same water requirements. No matter where you live in Florida, there will always be different types of plants.

Be smart about watering. Irrigate as needed. Use a rain shut-off valve to avoid over-watering. It's best to water early in the morning to minimize water loss through evaporation.

If you decide to grow a grass lawn, do so in areas used for recreation. Realize that turf requires more water. When cutting, raise the lawn mower blade for a higher cut.

More Garden Tips:

One way to get rid of lingering weeds in a newly prepared garden is to "solarize" them. Cover the area with clear plastic and let the sun do the work. This works best in hot climates.

Prevent the germination of weeds in your lawn or garden by using corn gluten. This also acts as a fertilizer. Will not kill the existing weeds or other already established plants.
